Several area fire departments were dispatched at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 27, to put out a brush fire along the 2500 block of Davis Street Ferry Road in rural East Carondelet (Bixby neighborhood just west of I-255). The 90-acre area is composed of a dense thicket of trees, brush and undergrowth. Dry conditions and a steady wind are putting the firefighters to the test. Crews finally had it contained and wrapped up by 5:30 p.m.
There was no damage to any structures, and there no injuries.
“Everyone did an excellent job battling this fire that was extremely difficult to access,” said Herb Simmons, of the St. Clair County EMA, and is also an East Carondelet resident. “This is yet another example of great teamwork involving first responders from across three counties coming together.”
Participating fire departments include Columbia, Dupo, Prairie du Pont, Waterloo, Valmeyer, Cahokia, Camp Jackson Millstadt, State Park Swansea, Signal Hill, Madison, Mitchell, Long Lake and Fairview Heights, along with the St. Clair County EMA, Medstar EMS and the American Red Cross.
