A quiet, Sunday morning flight got a bit interesting for the pilot after landing at Sackman Field off Bluff Road on the west end of Columbia. The pilot was not injured in a minor accident on Sunday, March 19.
After making a smooth touchdown just after 10 a.m., plane continued down the runway to reduce its speed. The engine unexpectedly cut out as the plane neared the end of the runway. The plane continued to coast past the runway onto a freshly plowed farm field. When the wheels hit the uneven dirt, the plane flipped over.
The pilot was able to safely exit the plane and called in to report the incident. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department arrived on the scene to verify all was okay.
