Gas Leak In Downtown Columbia

(1:40 p.m.) There is a gas leak in downtown Columbia. Workers installing new water pipes hit a gas line at 207 N. Main (Main at Locust - Schlemmer Building). Utility crews from Ameren / IP and the Columbia Fire Department have been dispatched. Main Street is closed for several blocks in the vicinity. Citizens are asked to avoid the area until further notice. Police are notifying those who are being evacuated to a safe location. 

Emergency crews have set up a staging area at the Ace Hardware parking lot. Firefighters from Waterloo, Millstadt and Dupo have been dispatched to assist. 

2:30 p.m. The area of evacuation is expanding to a few blocks from the site of the leak... Officials are going door to door announcing which buildings need to be evacuated.... Main Street closed between City Hall and Charlie's Carstar - also, side street are now being closed - Rapp / Metter.

Citizens who have evacuated can stay at Columbia City Hall. 

An asphalt cutter accidentally cut a gas line at 207 N. Main in downtown Columbia.

Police have set up a perimeter around the area.
