The Solario Sun Warriors defeated Gibault 6-0 to win the Class 2A State Soccer Title. Gibault heads home with the second place trophy. Gibault had previously finished in second place in 2009.

The Gibault soccer team is on the Hoffman Estates field at this point getting ready to play for the Class 2A Stat Title. The Hawks ((18-6-3) are set to play the Sun Warriors from Solario Academy (17-6-4). Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Solario Academy plays in Chicago’s public schools league. They are a school of 1,139 students, compared to Gibault’s 379. Solario defeated St. Patrick’s Catholic of Chicago 1-0 in their semi-final game.

This is Gibault’s first year competing at the 2A level. Last year the Hawks took third place in the 1A State Tournament. Gibault has one first place in 1A in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 1013; earning second place in 2009, taking third in 2001, 2008 and 2016; and fourth place in 2002.

Gibault earned their spot to play in the state tournament by winning the Civic Memorial Regional, Columbia Sectional and Springfield Super Sectional. In their first round game at state, the Hawks rallied from 1-0 first-half deficit to defeat Wheaton Academy 2-1 on goals by Karson Huels and Ryan Swindle. Goalie Connor Olson and the GHS defense played one of their best games of the year.

The team will have to match – and surpass – yesterday’s effort to bring home the first place trophy.
