Big Hearted Guitarist Dies Following A Fall At His Home

Lifelong Monroe County resident and popular St. Louis area rock guitarist Stephen Jaycox, 32, passed away at his rural Fults home on Friday, April 13. He died after falling down a flight of stairs leading to his basement, reports the Monroe County coroner’s office.

An autopsy was conducted on Sunday, April 15, with the cause of death pending toxicology results. Funeral arrangements are pending at Quernheim Funeral Home.

Jaycox was known as a kind-hearted soul and a talented guitar player who liked heavy metal music. He played in several bands, including Dazed And Confused STL. Many folks saw him perform  during last year's Songs For Soldiers concert.

Stephen was employed as welder in St. Louis. Besides his music, he enjoyed working on cars and trucks, cooking and riding his Harley motorcycle.

Rusty Ezzell, longtime friend and bandmate in Dazed And Confused STL, has high praise for his dear friend. “He was just a beautiful soul who never said a bad thing about anyone. He was honest to a fault, and saw the good in every situation.” When someone was feeling down, Ezzell can fondly remember Jaycox saying positive words to turn the situation around. Jaycox would say, “Buck up and stop whining about something we can’t change. Pick up your sorrow, throw on some Slayer, open that Budweiser, and get your bangover on.”

A celebration of life party in Stephen’s honor will take place Friday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. Music will begin at 7:30 p.m. Those taking part include members of the band Dazed And Confused STL, Where's Charlie? and Mathew Diekemper.
