The Monroe County community continues to show their support to a family who lost a son in a farming accident earlier this year. The family of the late Johan Matthews was on hand at the Monroe County Fair on Thursday, July 25 for the 4-H and FFA Livestock Sale. They were presented a check for $7,000 to fund a scholarship in honor of Jonah who died this past June in Fults.
Prior to the start of the fair, Cassie Allscheid decided to start a fundraiser for a scholarship in Jonah’s name. Cassie and Jonah have both been active for years showing beef at the fair. Cassie helped design t-shirts that were sold for $15 throughout Fair Week. Thanks for generous donations from those participating in the auction, an additional $1,000 was raised bringing the day’s final tally to just over $8,000.
In addition, the Matthews family is now sponsoring the Senior Steer Showmanship trophy during the Fair’s Steer Show. In addition to the trophy, the winner will receive a $400 award. This year’s recipient was Adam Doyle of rural Prairie du Rocher. It was especially poignant since Adam and Jonah were longtime friends.
